Yes, Google Shopping created its own game show.
In an effort to educate online shoppers about the latest Google Shopping updates — featuring enhanced filtering and personalization capabilities — Google launched a lighthearted and entertaining game show series on YouTube called, “Can You Gift It?”
LEARN MORE about how Google Shopping works.
Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, each episode of the five-episode series features a pair of celebrity contestants engaged in friendly competition — and banter — to choose gifts for family and friends while completing trivia-based activities that utilize Google’s vast database of search data and shopping insights.
“We discovered around 60% of people like to treat the holiday gifting period as a little bit of friendly competition, like, ‘Who’s going to give the best gift?’ So we centered an entire campaign all around this [idea],” said Stephanie Horton, senior director of global commerce marketing for Google.
While you can binge the entire series in a quick 30 minutes, the campaign — that ended December 5 — extended beyond YouTube to ads across connected TV and social media, also featuring several celebrity duos in Christmas shopping mode.
The entertainment value of the campaign is undeniable. But what about the educational aspect?
Four Quick Things “Can You Gift It?” Teaches Us About Google Shopping
- It’s a simple solution. What’s easier than selecting items from images on a screen? Anyone can win at gift-giving with just a few clicks.
- It’s a savvy solution. According to Kimmel, it’s the “Google Shopping game show where the deals are endless and everyone wins.” Each episode features “shop deals” that show typical gift item categories on sale.
- It’s a personalized solution. In the final round, contestants compete for a Scrambled Mystery Deal, with Google Shopping filters used as clues to help narrow down the mystery product.
- It’s an all-encompassing solution. No matter who or what you’re shopping for, “Google Shopping has you covered,” as Kimmel confidently declares at the end of every episode.
I can’t promise Google Shopping’s “Can You Gift It?” will be your next holiday favorite, but it is a fun way to spend a half hour and might just be the motivation you need to finish your Christmas shopping.
Or, even better, let it motivate you to invest in your website and ensure those savvy Google shoppers find your products when they search.
