WithIt Student Mentoring Day career panel

I had the immense honor of being invited to join a panel of remarkable women in the home furnishings industry at the High Point Furniture Market. As part of Student Mentoring Day, this panel aimed to spotlight the diverse and often overlooked career paths available to women in our field—from data analysis and product design to technology, retail ownership, transportation, and more.

Throughout the session, I was privileged to share insights from my 20+ year journey, recounting the steps, climbs, and achievements that have shaped my career. And while each career path is unique, something we all shared on the panel was the importance of mentorship. Mentoring has been pivotal in my own journey; having not just one mentor, but several, has guided me through challenges and growth at each stage. I believe strongly in the power of mentors both within and beyond your industry—they can offer fresh perspectives, broaden your vision, and provide invaluable support when you need it most.

Mentorship has not only impacted my success but also shaped how I approach my own role today. I see my commitment to mentoring others as a way of honoring the dedication of those who supported me, passing along the insights and encouragement they poured into me. It was deeply meaningful to share this message with students, showing them that we’re all part of a continuum of support and inspiration that strengthens our industry.

At the close of the panel session, I hosted a round table focused specifically on technology careers for women, exploring how roles in tech can significantly impact the home furnishings industry. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage with students and their professors about the potential for tech-driven careers that are not only rewarding but are also at the forefront of innovation in our field.

I’m truly grateful to have been part of this experience, sharing insights alongside so many talented professionals who, like me, are passionate about guiding the next generation. Together, we’re helping to broaden perspectives on what a career in home furnishings can look like—and encouraging young women to dream big, seek mentors, and make their mark in this dynamic industry.
